GLOBAL DATA GOVERNANCE PROGRAM ROLL OUT

CLIENT PAIN POINTS

The Challenge

A multinational beverage company wanted to move from pockets of local reporting to a consistent, enterprise-wide approach to data. In Japan, data had grown in departmental silos with overlapping sources and conflicting definitions, which made it hard to get a reliable, end-to-end view of the business. Policies were ad-hoc, access controls uneven, and there was no clear single owner for core data domains.

Beyond organizational gaps, the foundations were missing: no local MDM, no documented cartography of systems and data, and limited awareness of governance practices across teams. The company needed to quickly kick-start a program to stabilize today’s reporting while preparing for tomorrow’s analytics and AI.

EFFORTS

Our Solutions

We launched a structured data-governance program, built to scale:

  • Ran executive and departmental workshops to surface pain points across the data lifecycle (acquisition → maintenance → dissemination → archival) and to prioritize issues.
  • Mapped the data landscape (sources, systems, and flows) and created a shared taxonomy for domains, families, KPIs, and key use cases.
  • Defined roles and responsibilities: sponsors, owners, and stewards; and launched a cross-functional Data Governance Council to give the program clear accountability and cadence.
  • Delivered core governance assets: data dictionary and catalog, classification standards, business rules, and consolidation/integration guidelines; set up preventative data-quality audits and a practical documentation hub.
  • Embedded change management with regular communications, templates, and a prioritized roadmap so the program would operate as an ongoing capability, not a one-off project.

OUTCOMES

The Results

  • Diagnosed the four systemic issues blocking trustworthy analytics: redundant data, lack of an exhaustive view of data models, unclear ownership, and business processes that weren’t understood or documented.
  • Equipped teams with methodologies, tools, and templates to deploy and maintain governance practices across business units, turning sporadic efforts into a consistent program.
  • Established a durable, business-led governance model via the Data Governance Council and stewardship framework, building a data-oriented culture and positioning the company for upcoming initiatives such as AI-enabled use cases.
